OFFICE DESCRIPTION The New Jersey Department of Transportation is accepting applications for candidates interested in Civil Engineer Trainee (CET) positions for the Bureau of Transportation Data and Safety. Civil Engineer Trainees are assigned a 40 - hour work week. Current starting salary is $53,268.53 and after six months is $55,732.50. Benefits include medical, prescription drug, dental and pension.

Work experience within this unit WILL NOT qualify as approved Design Experience for the issuance of a NJ PE License.

OFFICE DESCRIPTION The Bureau of Transportation Data & Safety, specifically the Traffic & Technology Section, is the lead for gathering a wide array of traffic data through various collection methods. The section is responsible for administering the Federally Mandated Traffic Monitoring Program. It maintains approximately 150 TMS sites throughout the state of New Jersey. It manages multiple contracts gathering data; Traffic Monitoring Data Collection contract, Infrastructure Renewal Contract and Light Maintenance Contract. The contracts allow to collect short term counts data (48 hours samples - 1500 locations annually) and repair Weigh - In - Motion and Traffic Volume permanent monitoring stations (24 hours / 365 days). The data is analyzed and summarized on a monthly basis. The results are shared with FHWA and various agencies internally and externally.


1. Responsible for monitoring and analyzing traffic data from Weigh - in - Motion (WIM) systems throughout the State. Monitor performance of all WIM sites in the office and in the field. Perform traffic data analysis in accordance with Federal Traffic Monitoring Guide (TMG) standards 2. Edit, code and tabulate collected data using different computer applications in a format required by the Federal Highway Administration and the Strategic Highway Research Program for submission 3. Learn how to prepare and submit New Jersey's calendar year (VTRIS) data package to the FHWA. Update the flow network of Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL) factors for the light and heavy trucks, based on truck weight data 4. Learn and provide traffic data for Departmental geometric, operational, and pavement design purposes 5. Provide reports of traffic data to meet the informational needs of various public and private agencies 6. Participate in quality assurance (QA) data process. Review all questionable data and suggest a course of action 7. Learn to troubleshoot computer hardware and software failures relative to the software and hardware used in gathering data 8. Process requests for vehicle classification and other related traffic and engineering data received from various customers, and compile it according to their request 9. Learn how to utilize GIS software to analyze traffic count short term counts data. Report results to its supervisor


REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.

Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14 - 7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act."
