DESCRIPTION The New Jersey Department of Transportation is accepting applications for candidates interested in Civil Engineer Trainee (CET) positions for the Division of Operations. Civil Engineer Trainees are assigned a 40 - hour work week. Current starting salary is $53,268.53 and after six months is $55,732.50. Benefits include medical, prescription drug, dental and pension.

Civil Engineer Trainee (CET) in the Permits, Electrical and Claims (PEC) Unit will function as a Case Manager for Highway Occupancy Permits. This unit is responsible for authorizing an entity to perform work that impacts the State highway system, such as aerial or underground utility work within NJDOT's Right of Way. The CET will work with the applicant in the preparation of a complete permit application, including developing acceptable plans for the project. After issuance of the permit, the CET will inspect the work in the field to ensure that the work is in accordance with the plans and all permit conditions, including allowable lane closures, traffic safety and pavement restoration.

Work experience within this unit WILL NOT qualify as approved Design Experience for the issuance of a NJ PE License

Preferred Qualities/Experience

  • Good communication skills
  • Knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Experience in the review and interpreting of plans
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply Administrative Codes, rules and regulations relating to utilities, highway occupancy and highway access

    REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.

    Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States according to the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. NJDOT does not provide sponsorship or accept student/OPT program, F1 or H1B work authorization visas.

    Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14 - 7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act."
