OFFICE DESCRIPTION The New Jersey Department of Transportation is accepting applications for candidates interested in Civil Engineer Trainee (CET) positions for the Division of Operations. Civil Engineer Trainees are assigned a 40 - hour work week. Current starting salary is $53,268.53 and after six months is $55,732.50. Benefits include medical, prescription drug, dental and pension.

As a Civil Engineer Trainee (CET) in the Central Region, you will be part of a fast - moving high - output team. The Region is responsible for the maintenance of state highways, roadsides and bridges and equipment repair. The Region has over 379 Personnel, 27 Operational Crews, 5 Garages and an Engineering Section.

Work experience within this unit WILL NOT qualify as approved Design Experience for the issuance of a NJ PE License

POSITION DESCRIPTION CET in this position will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing and interpreting plans, and specifications
  • Participate in preparing as - built plans; cost estimates of materials for specific projects
  • Operate a transit and level
  • Stake final grades
  • Locate and plot topographical features
  • Perform engineering calculations
  • Collect, compute, and analyze hydrologic, hydraulic, and other engineering data for flood control work
  • Check and sample materials for laboratory tests
  • Conduct inspection of all materials and products used in the construction and maintenance of highways and transportation facilities
  • Lay out and conducts detailed inspections of excavating, embankment, earthwork, concrete, sheet asphalt, curbs, pipes, guard rails, culverts, inlets and utility holes
  • Investigate dependable yield of surface water
  • Participate in hydrologic analyses of storm rainfall and flood runoff, and develops basic flood control data
  • Inspect and oversee construction of bridges, buildings, dams, highways, and other public works projects to ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications
  • Prepare various engineering reports, documents, and correspondence
  • Receive and investigate inquiries from property owner, citizen and public officials.

    Preferred Qualities/Experience

  • Background in bridge, roadway and drainage design, construction, maintenance and inspection
  • Knowledge of plan and specification writing
  • Proficiency in utilizing computers and general software
  • Ability to use specialized software


    REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.

    Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14 - 7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act."
