OFFICE DESCRIPTION The New Jersey Department of Transportation is accepting applications for candidates interested in Civil Engineer Trainee (CET) positions for the Division of Capital Program Management. Civil Engineer Trainees are assigned a 40 - hour work week. Current starting salary is $53,268.53 and after six months is $55,732.50. Benefits include medical, prescription drug, dental and pension.

The Division of Capital Program Support provides engineering and administrative support to Capital Program Management along with implementing various work programs for the Department. The major function of the division is to help the Department design projects for deliverability. This requires engineering support during all phases of project development - Planning/Concept Development, Preliminary Engineering, Final Design, and during Construction. Capital Program Support includes four Offices: The Program Management Office (PMO), Design Standards (DS), Utility Management (UM), and the Bureau of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Solutions (BLAES). Work experience within this unit WILL NOT qualify as approved Design Experience for the issuance of a NJ PE License

POSITION DESCRIPTION Responsibilities of the CET in this position will include:

  • Review and interpret plans and specifications in accordance with design standards and federal/state regulations.
  • Prepare engineering and other reports.
  • Provide guidance and support to various types of projects in design and construction
  • Perform Value Analysis methodology and risk analysis
  • Review plans, maps and other documents for proposed construction projects.
  • Utilize engineering software to design and review projects
  • Coordinate with in - house units and external companies and agencies
  • Maintain records and files.

    REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.

    Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States according to the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. NJDOT does not provide sponsorship or accept student/OPT program, F1 or H1B work authorization visas.

    Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14 - 7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act."
