  Oregon Department of Transportation, Highway Division - Region 4   This position performs both senior inspector and junior designer tasks. As the senior inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring daily contract compliance on transportation projects. As the junior designer, you will complete designs of minor to semi-complex transportation projects using current design standards, policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities

Senior Inspector

  • Read, comprehend, and enforce contract plans and specifications for road and bridge construction contracts.
  • Report and coordinate all assigned phases of work between the project manager's office and the contractor on major projects.
  • Inspect, document, accept or reject work performed and material installed
  • Check quantity of material being placed, method of placement, and conformance to line and grade.
  • Perform complex engineering calculations (field design) associated with the layout and design of contract plans and specifications.   
  • Check the paving equipment to see that it meets specifications.
  • Review the contractor's project schedule to determine personnel needs to meet the scheduled work. 
  • Check and monitor horizontal and vertical alignments of all pile, footings, bents, beam seats, walls,and decks for bridge construction. 
  • Monitor traffic protection for safety of the traveling public.
  • Monitor DBE, EEO, and trainee programs for compliance.
  • Coordinate the relocation efforts of utilities involved with highway construction.
  • Responsible for quality control documentation and coordination with QCCS.
  • Preliminary CCO preparation and negotiation.
  • Environmental permit review and compliance monitoring.

 
Junior Designer

  • Prepare drawings,maps, and technical reports; operate computers and design software.
  • Perform engineering and survey computations for design of construction projects
  • Determine, obtain, and record all necessary field data for planning and design of highway construction projects.
  • Work as project coordinator.

 
Training

  • Train personnel in inspection, surveying, materials testing and office administration at local and statewide levels.

 
Working Conditions :
 

  • This is a high stress position with competing demands, tight time schedules, simultaneous or identical deadlines, working with contractors and processing special requests. 
  • May communicate with irate contractors and public. 
  • Assists with the administration, of large construction projects on tight time schedules with limited personnel and financial constraints. 
  • May also be subjected to extreme hazards of traffic, construction equipment, weather, animals, plants, and terrain.

Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills

Minimum Qualifications :

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, surveying, or transportation-related engineering and one (1) year civil engineering or surveying experience.

OR

  • An associate's degree in engineering technology or surveying from a recognized community college or technical school of engineering and two (2) and one-half (1/2) years of engineering or surveying experience.

One (1) year of this experience must have been working independently or as a senior member of a team or work group.

OR

  • Four (4) years of *para-professional engineering or surveying experience.

One (1) year of this experience must have been working independently or as a senior member of a team or work group.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Para-professional engineering experience primarily includes performing drafting, inspection/surveying work, reviewing the work of lower level engineering specialists, and has not authority for authorizing changes.

Special Qualifications :

  • Must have a valid drivers' license and acceptable driving record.

Preferred Attributes :

  • Experience with a demonstrated strong working knowledge of:
    • Mathematics (geometry, algebra and trigonometry).
    • Materials testing procedures.
    • Land surveying.
    • Highway construction methods and standards.
    • Road and construction procedures and practices.
